Overview
CHAI is a hosted platform for chatting with user-created character chatbots across a large, community-built catalog. Rather than relicensing outside models for its consumer product, CHAI trains and serves its own large language models, run across a proprietary GPU cluster. Day-to-day use is built around discovery and iteration rather than a single fixed chat window: bots are browsed through a swipeable feed, and once inside a conversation, any AI reply can be swiped away and regenerated on the spot. CHAI calls this reroll, a lightweight way to correct a reply that forgot a detail, try a different tone, or just see another option without editing anything by hand.
Bot-creation mechanics
Creating a bot on CHAI means setting a name, avatar, and opening message, then writing what CHAI's own creator documentation calls the Memory Prompt, the instruction block covering personality, backstory, and speaking style. A strong opening message and a consistent Memory Prompt are what CHAI's own guidance points to as the main drivers of a bot's performance across many different conversations, more so than any single setting.
Model technology and Chaiverse
CHAI applies techniques including reinforcement learning from human feedback, fine-tuning, Direct Preference Optimization, and model blending or routing across multiple underlying models to shape response quality. Separately, CHAI operates Chaiverse, a developer platform where outside researchers submit candidate LLMs that get deployed to a slice of live CHAI traffic and ranked on a public leaderboard using real user feedback rather than offline benchmarks alone. In chat, a user-facing context-window setting lets a user control how much recent conversation the model works from on each reply, with paid tiers including access to models with a larger context window.
Content policy and adult-content positioning
CHAI's published safety documentation states that its "models and real-time safety systems are designed to refuse the generation of restricted material, including sexually explicit content." The platform also scans messages in real time for self-harm content and either declines to respond or substitutes a safer alternative when it's detected, with in-app options to hide explicit messages or block specific characters. CHAI is restricted to users 18 and older.
CHAI's current safety documentation positions it as restricting explicit sexual content rather than permitting it. This differs from character-chat platforms that explicitly allow adult content between consenting adult characters, so CHAI should not be assumed to function as an NSFW-focused alternative to those services.
Access model and pricing structure
CHAI's free tier is capped at a limited number of messages within a rolling time window and runs ads; paid tiers remove that cap, and a higher tier adds access to a different set of models advertised as CHAI's strongest. Heavier users have a separate, higher-volume plan available on top of the standard subscription tiers. CHAI's web client and mobile apps use separate subscriptions. A plan purchased through the website does not unlock paid features inside the iOS or Android app, and the reverse is also true; each platform has to be paid for on its own.
Limitations
There's no public API for building on top of CHAI as a consumer product: the closest thing is Chaiverse, a separate developer program where outside researchers submit candidate models for evaluation against live traffic, not a way to integrate CHAI's chat into another app. The free tier's message cap and the lack of subscription portability between web and mobile are the two most concrete day-to-day constraints compared to some other platforms in this category.
Important distinctions
CHAI is often mentioned alongside Character.AI and JanitorAI as one of the earlier large-scale consumer character-chat products. Both CHAI and Character.AI run conversations entirely on their own in-house models, unlike JanitorAI's bring-your-own-model design. Where CHAI differs from Character.AI is mechanical: CHAI's swipeable discovery feed and per-reply reroll control are core to its interface in a way Character.AI's more conventional chat-list UI doesn't replicate, and CHAI has no equivalent to Character.AI's Group Chat, Scenes, or video-avatar generation. Unlike JanitorAI, CHAI does not offer a bring-your-own-API-key mechanic for outside models in its consumer app: third-party model access is limited to the separate Chaiverse developer program.
