A default chatbot like a generic assistant answers as itself, with no persistent identity beyond "the AI." A character chatbot instead answers as somebody: a named character with a personality, a way of speaking, and often a backstory, maintained consistently across the conversation. That character can be almost anything: an original companion, a version of a fictional character, a historical or public-figure-styled persona, or a purpose-built helper with personality (a "study buddy," a "dungeon master").
Technically, a character chatbot is built the same way as any AI companion: an LLM, a persona definition, a system prompt that enforces it, and usually some character memory so the persona stays consistent across a session or over time.
Adult-AI use
Character chatbot is the umbrella product category that most adult AI chat platforms are, even when their marketing leads with a narrower label like "AI girlfriend." Products vary in the persona library, the memory system, whether the platform allows user-created or user-customized characters, and its content policy, rather than the base conversational technology, which is broadly shared across the category.
Many platforms let users create or heavily customize their own character, which is where character chatbots and AI roleplay overlap most directly: the chatbot supplies the persistent character, and roleplay is the interaction style used to play scenes out with it. Character.AI, one of the largest platforms in this category, explicitly prohibits pornographic content, while others such as JanitorAI allow NSFW roleplay under their own published content policies.
How it differs from AI companion and AI roleplay
- AI companion emphasizes the relationship framing: an ongoing bond with the user. A character chatbot doesn't need that framing; a fictional detective you consult for a one-off mystery scenario is a character chatbot but not really a "companion."
- AI roleplay is the interaction mode, collaborative in-character fiction, not a product. You can roleplay with a character chatbot, or roleplay directly with a general-purpose LLM that has no dedicated persona product around it at all.
Character chatbot names the product, persona names the character definition, and roleplay names the interaction mode.
Common uses
- Multi-character platforms where users pick from (or create) a library of personas.
- Companion and romantic-roleplay apps, which are character chatbots with a relationship-focused persona.
- Fandom or original-fiction roleplay bots built around a specific character concept.
- Personality-driven utility bots (tutors, game masters) that use a character persona for a non-romantic purpose.

Limitations and misconceptions
- Persona strength varies. A weakly-specified persona and system prompt can let the underlying LLM's default personality "leak through," breaking character consistency.
- Chatbots built on real people raise consent issues. Character chatbots styled on real, identifiable public figures without their involvement or consent are a distinct and contested category, separate from original or licensed-fiction characters.
