An AI companion is designed for recurring interaction with a persistent character, usually with a consistent persona and some form of memory.
An AI companion typically combines a chat interface with a large language model (LLM). The companion framing comes from a defined persona, some system for remembering past interactions, and a product experience (avatars, voice, notifications, a sense of continuity) built around retention and emotional connection rather than task completion.
How AI companion apps are built
Typical AI companion components include an underlying LLM (often a commercial API, sometimes a fine-tuned or uncensored model the company runs itself), a system prompt that defines the character's personality and rules, some layer of character memory so the bot recalls facts about you, and a front end that presents all of this as a named character with an avatar, and often a voice or generated image set.
Companion apps differ mainly in these supporting layers (how good the memory is, how the persona is customized, whether it supports voice or images, and how (or whether) it handles adult content), rather than in the base language technology, which is broadly similar across the category.
Adult-AI use
AI companion is the umbrella term for relationship-oriented chat products. AI girlfriend, AI boyfriend, and character chatbot describe a character's role or the product's framing. Almost all dedicated adult-oriented chat products (girlfriend apps, boyfriend apps, NSFW roleplay platforms) are AI companions in this broad sense, even when they market themselves under a more specific label.
Romantically framed companions are the largest and most commercially visible part of the adult-AI market. They are often paired with AI-generated images or a generated voice for the character, and typically monetize through subscriptions or credits for messages, images, or unlocking more explicit interaction tiers. Whether adult content is available at all, and how it is gated, varies a lot between platforms and is usually tied to age verification and each platform's own content policy.
The term also appears in discussions of retention, loneliness, and emotional dependency in AI products, because companion apps are explicitly optimized for users returning daily, which is a different design goal than a general-purpose assistant. Examples with published product documentation include Candy AI, Nomi, and Replika, each taking a different approach to persona, memory, and content policy.
AI girlfriend, AI boyfriend, and character chatbot
These labels describe framing and persona rather than different technology. All of them run the same stack: a language model driving a persona, with a memory layer on top.
- AI companion is the broad category: any app built around an ongoing relationship with a persistent AI character, romantic or not, from platonic "AI friend" products to explicitly sexual ones.
- AI girlfriend is a companion framed as a romantic partner with a female-presenting persona. It names both a product category (apps positioned around a single ongoing relationship, with daily check-ins, pet names, a defined personality and backstory) and a persona type inside a multi-character platform. It is the earlier-established and still larger side of the market.
- AI boyfriend is the symmetrical male-presenting counterpart: the same product pattern with the persona's gender reversed. Historically a smaller slice, it has grown considerably as demand from women and LGBTQ+ users became more visible, and many platforms now offer male, female, and non-binary personas from one app rather than running separate girlfriend- and boyfriend-branded products.
- Character chatbot is the underlying product type, a chat interface wrapped around a persistent persona. It doesn't have to be romantic; a study-buddy bot or a fictional detective character is a character chatbot but not usually an "AI companion" in the relationship sense.
A single app can fit several of these at once: a character-chatbot platform whose flagship personas are marketed as AI companions, some framed specifically as an AI girlfriend or an AI boyfriend.
Limitations and misconceptions
- It's a product, not a person. The affection and continuity an AI girlfriend or AI boyfriend expresses is generated text from a language model following a persona, not a mind with independent feelings.
- "Remembering you" has limits. Companion apps vary widely in memory quality (see character memory and long-term memory) and even good implementations can forget, misremember, or contradict earlier conversation.
- Personality consistency isn't guaranteed. Because the character is an LLM following a system prompt, long or unusual conversations can cause it to drift out of character or produce a hallucination about the relationship's history.
- Explicitness varies by platform and jurisdiction. Some apps restrict or fully block sexual content, others allow it behind age gates or paid tiers; policies also shift over time as platforms respond to payment processor and legal pressure.
- It's not a general-purpose assistant. Companion apps are tuned for conversational, relational interaction; they're often noticeably worse than general-purpose assistants at factual research or complex task help.
