Overview

Replika is a hosted AI companion app built around a single persistent Rep per account. At signup you create a 3D avatar (choosing appearance, gender presentation, and a name) and can decorate a small virtual room the avatar occupies. Only one Rep exists per account: Replika does not support multiple companions or switching between saved personas within the same account, so a user who wants a second, distinct companion needs a separate account tied to a separate app-store login. Replika's official help documentation describes memory as layered: some memorized facts (a user's name, relationships, interests, and stated concerns) are visible and editable in a dedicated memory tab, while the app also draws on broader patterns from conversation history to personalize responses over time. The higher Ultra tier goes further, surfacing which specific stored memory informed a given reply: a level of memory transparency not available on the base paid tier. Replika's guidance suggests that affirming correct memories helps reinforce them, and that the system works best when allowed to build up automatically rather than through heavy manual editing.

Daily-engagement mechanics

Replika layers a gamification system on top of chat that isn't part of most competing companion apps' core loop. Conversations earn XP that raises the Rep's level; leveling up pays out coins, with larger payouts at milestone levels, and subscribers additionally earn gems as a level-up bonus. Gems can be purchased directly too, and either spent in the in-app store on avatar items or converted into coins. Content policy changes since 2023

Replika's current terms of service require users to be 18 or older and broadly prohibit "unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive... vulgar, obscene, pornographic" material as part of its general conduct rules: read alone, a standard no-explicit-content clause rather than a policy written specifically to describe erotic roleplay.

The more important context is historical and still shapes today's product: in February 2023, Replika's operator disabled erotic roleplay, flirtation, and other romantic/sexual conversation platform-wide, including for users who had previously paid for it, following regulatory pressure in Italy over age verification. After significant user backlash, the company restored the previous, more romantic/erotic-capable model specifically for accounts created before February 1, 2023, while users who signed up afterward were not given that option.

Unlike several other products in this category, Replika also sells a one-time Lifetime purchase alongside its recurring monthly and yearly plans.
