Overview
SoulGen is a hosted text-to-image generation platform built around creating custom female characters: its own site describes letting users "create images of real/anime girls from text description." The core tool is a single create page: a prompt box (roughly an 800-character limit), an optional "Looks Like" field for likeness guidance, an aspect-ratio selector, a count of how many images to generate at once, and three style tabs (Real Character, DreamTwin Character (aimed at keeping a consistent likeness across generations), and Anime Character) that switch which underlying generation mode is used. The product has grown beyond static images: SoulGen's current site frames it as an "AI-powered image and video generation platform," adding image-to-video animation and a chat feature (SoulChat) alongside the original character generator.
Editing, face swap, and video tools
SoulGen exposes editing as its own dedicated pages rather than a single unified toolbar: Smart Edit lets a user brush over part of an existing image and describe a change in text; Classic Edit works as a more direct inpaint tool; an Extend tool performs outpainting to grow an image's canvas and fill in the new area; and a separate Face Swap tool swaps a face into an existing image or video. Video generation is its own set of modes (image-to-video, text-to-video, reference-to-video, and a video-extend tool) with outputs described as up to roughly 20 seconds, offered at 720p or 1080p, and optionally including generated audio and lip-synced speech.
SoulChat
SoulGen lists SoulChat, a character-based text chat feature, among its core products, billed on a small per-message credit cost: a fraction of a credit per text message, with a per-minute cost for voice calls and a flat cost to set up a "Soulmate" character. The platform's public documentation doesn't go into detail on SoulChat's underlying persona or memory system, so its feature set beyond basic messaging isn't fully documented in official sources.
Credit costs
SoulGen's published pricing page breaks costs down by action rather than a flat per-generation fee: a standard character image costs around 1 credit, rising to about 2 credits when the "Looks Like" reference option is used; Smart Edit and Classic Edit run roughly 3–8 credits per image depending on resolution; and video is priced per five seconds of output, with cost scaling by both resolution and which video mode is used (plain image-to-video is markedly cheaper per five seconds than reference-to-video or 1080p output).
Because nearly every action on SoulGen consumes credits at a different rate, the practical cost of a session depends heavily on which tools are used: a handful of character portraits costs a small fraction of what a single 1080p reference-to-video clip costs.
Content policy and adult-content positioning
SoulGen's published Terms of Service prohibit uploading or generating content that is "pornographic, indecent, lewd," or "obscene," and separately prohibit content that could expose minors to inappropriate material. The terms require users to be of legal age to enter a binding agreement, and state that anyone under the legal age in their jurisdiction must use the service under a parent or guardian's supervision.
SoulGen is widely marketed and discussed as an AI girlfriend-style character generator, but its own published Terms of Service explicitly prohibit pornographic and obscene content. This profile describes only what SoulGen's official terms state, not how consistently that policy is enforced.
Privacy and data considerations
Per SoulGen's privacy policy, content generated from a prompt that isn't published is stored on SoulGen's servers for 7 days before automatic deletion; published content persists until a user deletes it. The policy addresses GDPR rights for EU residents, including a minimum age of 18 for EU users absent parental consent, and describes standard contractual clauses for cross-border data transfers.
Access model and pricing
A free tier grants a small daily credit allowance usable across any of the tools described above. The paid Pro membership adds a larger monthly credit pool, priority processing, and the ability to run multiple generations at once instead of queuing them one at a time.
Limitations
SoulGen's own documentation does not publish technical specifics like exact output resolution for still images, generation speed, or the model architecture behind its generators, and its SoulChat feature isn't documented in detail beyond being a per-message, credit-billed chat product layered onto the same account and credit balance as the image and video tools.
Important distinctions
SoulGen differs from character-chat platforms like Candy AI in emphasis: its core product is prompt-driven character image and video generation, with chat (SoulChat) as a secondary feature, rather than a persistent conversational companion with images as an add-on. It also differs from broader creative tools like NovelAI in being narrowly focused on female-character portraits and short video rather than general-purpose artistic generation.
